No. 21 SMU 66, Memphis 57: Nic Moore scored 16 points to help the Mustangs knock off the Tigers in American Athletic Conference play.

Ryan Manuel and Yanick Moreira scored 11 points apiece as SMU (23-5, 14-2 AAC) recorded its fifth straight win and 21st in 23 games. Markus Kennedy registered a career-high six steals as the Mustangs moved a half-game ahead of Tulsa in the battle for first place in the conference.

Shaq Goodwin had 17 points and seven rebounds for Memphis (17-11, 9-6), which had a three-game winning streak halted. Nick King added 14 points, and Austin Nichols had eight rebounds and five blocked shots despite scoring just six points.

Calvin Godfrey’s jumper allowed Memphis to tie it at 48 with just under 10 minutes to play before SMU broke out with a 15-4 surge. Cannen Cunningham’s basket pushed the Mustangs back ahead, and Moore drained a jumper and a 3-pointer to make it 63-52 lead with 3:26 remaining.

King’s 3-pointer pulled the Tigers within 63-57, but Moore answered with a 3-pointer to push the lead right back to nine with 1:03 to play. Memphis was unable to make another push and lost at home to the Mustangs for only the second time in 10 meetings.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
SMU has won seven consecutive road games. … Nichols was 2-of-11 shooting after winning conference player of the week honors for last week’s play. … The Mustangs led 30-28 at the half despite shooting 34.8 percent from the field.
