St. John’s 58, Xavier 57: Sir'Dominic Pointer posted 19 points, nine rebounds and six blocks as the host Red Storm completed a regular-season sweep of the Musketeers.

Pointer added four steals and three assists to complete his dominant effort while D'Angelo Harrison scored a game-high 20 points for St. John’s (19-9, 8-7 Big East), which improved to 9-2 in its last 11 conference games at Madison Square Garden. Rysheed Jordan chipped in 10 points, six assists and five boards for the Red Storm.

Trevon Bluiett had 14 of his 17 points in the second half and pulled down seven rebounds for Xavier (18-11, 8-8), which fell for the second time in six contests. Remy Abell scored 11 points, Jalen Reynolds produced nine points and seven boards while Matt Stainbrook collected 10 rebounds as the Musketeers won the battle on the glass 47-27.

Xavier connected on its first three 3-point attempts and scored the first 11 points before St. John’s fired back with a 22-4 run – half of which came from Pointer – to take an eight-point advantage into the break. Harrison stretched the margin to 30-20 less than a minute into the second half, but the Red Storm went scoreless for 6½ minutes – missing six shots and four free throws – as the Musketeers surged ahead by rolling off the next 15 points.

Harrison drilled a triple with 6½ minutes remaining to put St. John’s back in front, beginning a sequence in which the lead changed hands five times over a two-minute span before Phil Greene IV gave the Red Storm the lead for good with a 3-pointer. Xavier moved in position to win it late after Pointer made it 58-53 with just under two minutes to go, but the senior swingman registered his final block with just over 30 seconds left and Myles Davis’ leaner just outside the lane hit off the back of the iron in the waning seconds.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Pointer, who became the 50th player in school history to score 1,000 career points, is averaging 17.1 points, eight rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 1.8 steals over his last 13 games. … Davis, who finished with five points, has posted his only two single-digit scoring games since Jan. 14 against the Red Storm. … St. John’s shot a season-worst 6-of-15 from the foul line.
