No. 19 Maryland 76, Penn State 73: Freshman Melo Trimble scored 20 points while converting 12-of-12 from the free-throw line and the visiting Terrapins recorded a season sweep after rebuffing the Nittany Lions.

Dez Wells scored 22 points as Maryland (21-5, 9-4 Big Ten) moved into sole possession of second place in the conference with its third victory in four games. Jake Layman contributed 13 points for the Terrapins, who blew a 13-point lead in the second half and finished 21-of-26 from the charity stripe.

D.J. Newbill scored 25 points for Penn State (15-11, 3-10), which lost for the fourth time in five games and second time in 15 contests this season when leading at halftime. The Nittany Lions, who went 2-for-9 from the field in the final 6:35, received 17 points from Geno Thorpe and 11 from Brandon Taylor.

Maryland unleashed a 22-8 run to start the second half - capped by a pair of 3-pointers by Jared Nickens - to take a 55-42 lead before the Nittany Lions scored 13 consecutive points to move in front 62-60 on Ross Travis' dunk with 7:52 remaining. Trimble's two free throws gave the Terrapins the lead for good 66-64 with 6:04 left before Layman made a pair from the line, blocked Thorpe's shot and sank a turn-around jumper in the lane on the next trip to make it 70-64 with 3:28 to play.

Trimble's driving basket following an effective ball fake with 1:22 remaining put the Terrapins on top 72-68 before Newbill sank a pair of free throws and stole the ball from Wells on the ensuing possession before turning it over at the other end. Trimble was fouled and made both free throws with 20.6 seconds to go and after Newbill drilled a 3-pointer with 13.6 seconds remaining, Trimble made another pair at the line with 12.8 seconds left to seal the victory.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Penn State had its streak of holding the opponent below its season average snapped at seven games as Maryland entered the game scoring 70.6 points per game. ... Maryland, which got six rebounds apiece from Trimble and Wells, improved to 18-0 when leading with five minutes to play. ... Penn State, which lost to No. 21 Ohio State 75-55 on Wednesday, is in a stretch of three straight games against ranked opponents with No. 4 Wisconsin visiting Wednesday.
