Tennessee 86, Massachusetts 67: Jarnell Stokes recorded 26 points and 14 rebounds as the Volunteers rolled over the Minutemen in the second round of the NCAA tournament at Raleigh, N.C.

Jordan McRae scored 21 points and Josh Richardson added 15 as 11th-seeded Tennessee (23-12) shot 53.6 percent from the field while playing its fourth game in eight days. Jeronne Maymon contributed 11 points and 11 boards for the Volunteers, who will play No. 14 seed Mercer in the third round of the Midwest regional on Sunday at Raleigh.

Chaz Williams and Maxie Esho led the way with 12 points apiece for sixth-seeded UMass (24-9), which lost for the fourth time in its last six games. Derrick Gordon added 10 points for the Minutemen, who were playing their first NCAA tournament game since 1998.

Massachusetts was within 12-8 six minutes into the game before the Volunteers ran off nine straight and pushed their lead to as much as 20 in the first half. McRae registered 14 points in the opening 20 minutes, including a one-handed dunk and a 3-pointer late as Tennessee held a 41-22 edge at intermission.

The Minutemen scored the first six of the second half and, when Sampson Carter hit the second of two straight 3-pointers, they trailed 46-36 with 14:17 left. The Volunteers responded by scoring 21 of the next 29 points – 10 by Stokes – to build a 67-44 lead with 8 1/2 minutes to go and they were on their way to a seventh win in the last eight games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Stokes notched his 21st double-double, the most in a season for Tennessee player since Bernard King’s 22 in 1976-77. … Williams moved past Tony Barbee for seventh on the all-time scoring list at UMass with 1,653 points in just three seasons and had five assists Friday to finish with a school-record 702. … McRae has scored at least 20 points in 17 games this season, including both in the NCAA tournament.
