Marcus Smart posted 23 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and six steals for the ninth-seeded Cowboys (21-13), but the sophomore star shot only 12-of-19 from the foul line as part of a 22-of-37 free-throw effort by the team. Bell hit two 3-pointers in the game's opening minute and Gonzaga led 9-0 after 2 1/2 minutes en route to a 43-34 halftime advantage. Bell and Karnowski combined for 22 first-half points on 8-of-9 shooting while Smart had 12 points in the opening 20 minutes to pace Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys recorded seven straight points to get within 53-50 with 11 1/2 minutes left in the game, but Bell nailed a 3-pointer and Pangos dropped in a layup on the next two possessions to stem the tide. Oklahoma State continued to chip away down the stretch, but Pangos went 10-of-10 from the foul line during the final 91 seconds to wrap up the victory.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Bell is 16-of-23 from the field and 8-of-10 from 3-point range over his last three games. ... Bulldogs leading scorer Sam Dower was held to three points on 1-of-5 shooting. He did contribute nine rebounds and four assists. ... The 61 fouls were the most in a non-overtime NCAA tournament game since 1975.
