Phillip McDonald scored 26 points and made five 3-point baskets to lead visiting New Mexico to an 82-64 rout of No. 3 Brigham Young on Wednesday.

Drew Gordon added 15 points and 16 rebounds as the Lobos (19-11, 7-8 Mountain West) completed a season sweep of the Cougars (27-3, 13-2).

BYU was playing without leading rebounder Brandon Davies, who was suspended from the team on Tuesday for a violation of the school’s honor code. Davies reportedly admitted to having sex with his girlfriend.

Jimmer Fredette, the nation's leading scorer, had 33 points, but hit only 10 of 26 shots and was 1 of 9 from 3-point range as the Cougars fell into a first-place tie with San Diego State.

The Cougars, who swept the Aztecs this season, host Wyoming while San Diego State plays Colorado State at home.

Without Davies, BYU was dominated on the boards 45-29, shot 33.9 percent from the field and fell behind early.

New Mexico led 13-2 on McDonald’s 3-pointer 3 1/2 minutes into the game and boosted the lead to 37-21 on Kendall Williams’ basket with 3:29 left in the half. The Lobos led 42-26 at halftime.

BYU pulled within 48-37 on Charles Abouo’s three-point play with 15:02 left, but New Mexico rolled off 11 straight points – including 3-pointers from McDonald and Jamal Fenton – to make it 59-37 with 12:59 remaining.

Williams had 15 points for the Lobos, while Jackson Emery added 11 points for the Cougars.
