Junior point guard Melo Trimble scored 21 points and freshman guard Anthony Cowan added 16 points and five assists as the University of Maryland caught fire in the second half to beat visiting Charlotte 88-72 on Tuesday at Royals Farm Arena in Baltimore.

Charlotte was paced by sophomore guard Jon Davis, who had 16 of his 28 points in the second half. Sophomore guard Andrien White of Charlotte had 10 of his 17 points in the first half. The Terps, who shot 51 percent from the field, improved to 12-1 while Charlotte fell to 6-5.

Junior center Mikal Cekovsky and freshman guard Kevin Huerter added 10 points for Maryland, which trailed by one at halftime. The Terps had 10 three-pointers in the first 16 minutes of the second half.

Maryland took a 42-39 lead early in the second half and built the margin to 56-49 with 13:01 left in the game on a three-pointer by Huerter.

A dunk by Davis with 9:34 left trimmed the Maryland lead to 60-55. But Trimble made a three-pointer with 8:38 left to give the Terps a lead of 65-55 and his layup built the margin to 67-55 with 7:32 left.

Cowan made two free throws with 4:45 to go as the Terps built the lead to 76-63. Maryland put the game away as junior guard Jaylen Brantley made a three-pointer with 3:47 to make it 83-64.

Davis, averaging nearly 20 points per contest, is from nearby Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He helped the 49ers take a 37-36 lead at intermission. Charlotte junior center Benas Griciunas had 12 points.

Maryland was 15 of 19 from the foul line in the first half but just one of nine from three-point range before making 10 of 13 three-point shots after the break. Charlotte was four of nine from long range and seven of nine from the line in the first half. The visitors were just four of 15 from three-point range in the game.

The Terps lasted played on Dec. 12, when they won at home over Jacksonville State of the Ohio Valley Conference. Maryland will begin conference play at home in College Park on Dec. 27 against Illinois. The 49ers are off until hosting North Texas on Dec. 31.
