Junior guard Ja'Quan Newton scored a career-high 23 points, and guard Davon Reed added 17 as Miami held off a late charge by Boston College for a 78-77 victory in an Atlantic Coast Conference basketball game Wednesday night at Coral Gables, Fla.

The Hurricanes (13-6, 3-4 ACC) appeared on their way to a comfortable win after overcoming a nearly six-minute scoring drought midway through the game. They took a 17-point lead at the midpoint of the second half.

However, guard Jerome Robinson sparked a second-half surge and finished with a game-high 27 points for the Eagles (9-12, 2-6). Boston College was within one possession in the closing seconds before guard Bruce Brown clinched it with two free throws that gave Miami a 78-74 lead with 4.6 seconds left.

Guard Jordan Chatman hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final points.

After playing their previous three games on the road and dropping the past two, the Hurricanes came out fired up back on their home court, going 12 of 20 from the field to build a 30-15 cushion less than 15 minutes into the game.

However, they went scoreless over the last 5:25 of the half, missing all five of their shots from the field and both free throws while turning the ball over four times in the final two minutes of the period.

That allowed the Eagles to close their deficit to 30-22 at the break.

Reed's driving hook shot ended Miami's drought less than 40 seconds in the second half, but the Eagles continued to peck away, pulling within 38-35 before the Hurricanes got things turned back in their direction.

Miami worked its way to a 61-44 lead by getting key steals and layups by forward Dewan Huell, Brown and Newton before the Eagles mounted their comeback.
