Matt Thomas had a career-high 23 points and eight rebounds to lead Iowa State to an 88-60 victory over visiting Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday night at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.

Thomas made 9 of 14 field-goal attempts and 3 of 7 from 3-point range for Iowa State (8-3). Nazareth Mitrou-Long scored 19 points and Monte Morris had 13.

Darrell Riley scored 18 points for Mississippi Valley State (0-12). Isaac Williams also had 18 points.

Mitrou-Long made two 3-pointers in the opening minutes to help Iowa State start the game with an 11-0 run. Mississippi Valley State battled back to tie the game on a layup by Rashaan Surles and took a 23-22 lead on a 3-pointer by Williams.

The Cyclones reclaimed the lead on a 3-pointer by Donovan Jackson as part of an 11-2 run that put them up 35-27 with just under five minutes to play in the opening period. They carried a 44-35 lead into the break.

Iowa State went up by 11 early in the second period and took a 51-37 lead on a layup by Thomas. Mississippi Valley State got within seven on two free throws by Williams with 13:18 remaining, but the Cyclones broke the game open with a 14-2 run.

Iowa State went up 70-51 on two free throws by Solomon Young, extended the lead to 25 points on a basket by Thomas and led by as many as 32 in the final minutes.

Iowa State shot a sizzling 57.1 percent from the field, made 13 of 26 from 3-point range and accumulated a 43-28 rebounding advantage. Mississippi Valley State shot 34.8 percent and made just 5 of 18 from beyond the arc.
