Torian Graham and Tra Holder combined for 55 points to lead Arizona State over Stanford 98-93 in the Pac-12 opener for both teams on Friday night in Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State (8-6) weathered a late rally fueled by Stanford guard Marcus Sheffield, who scored 15 of the Cardinal's last 21 points in the final four minutes and finished with a game-high 35.

Sheffield's 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining cut the lead to 95-93. Arizona State guard Shannon Evans II was fouled on the inbounds pass and he made both free throws to secure the win.

Evans made 12 of 14 free throws, including 9 of 10 in the second half.

Graham finished with 30 points and Holder 25 before he fouled as they combined to shoot 18 of 28 from the field. Their teammates were 8 of 23.

Arizona State's free-throw shooting was the difference late. The Sun Devils were 12 of 14 in the last 2:40, with Holder making all four of his attempts, and Evans making all six.

The Sun Devils scored the last seven points of the first half, including a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer by Graham to take a 52-39 lead.

The Sun Devils set the tone with only four turnovers in the first half while shooting 58.6 percent from the field. Graham scored 16 points in the half on 7-of-10 shooting from the field for 16 points. Holder scored 15 points before halftime.

Stanford cut the lead to 72-69 with 11:49 left in regulation with center Josh Sharma's dunk that capped a 9-2 run.

Arizona State withstood that rally, taking a 78-68 lead with 6:06 remaining after a jump shot by Graham.
