When: 7:00 PM ET, Wednesday, December 28, 2016
Where: Watsco Center, Coral Gables, Florida
Officials: # AJ Desai, # Raymond Styons, # Ted Valentine

Junior guard Ja'Quan Newton scored a career-high 22 points and guard Davon Reed added 18 as Miami overcame some sloppy floor play with sharp shooting to post a 78-67 victory over Columbia Wednesday night at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

The Hurricanes (10-2) had a season-high 20 turnovers but shot 54.7 percent from the field to notch their sixth consecutive win.

Newton just missed a double-double after snatching a career-high nine rebounds, but also accounted for half of Miami's turnovers with 10. Sophomore guard/forward Anthony Lawrence also was in double figures for Miami with 10 points.

Forward Luke Petrasek scored 16 points and forward Jeff Coby 13 for the visiting Lions (4-6), who lost for the fourth time in their last five games. Freshman guard Jake Killingsworth scored 12 points for Columbia.

The Hurricanes led 41-31 at the halftime break despite turning the ball over 12 times in the first 20 minutes, just one turnover short of their season average for the game entering the contest.

But they were 15 of 26 from the field and forced the Lions into 11 turnovers to make up somewhat for their mistakes.

The Lions cut the 10-point deficit down to 51-49 with just under 13 minutes to play, but the Hurricanes went on a 9-2 run to regain control. The Lions were never closer than five points the rest of the way.

The game wrapped up the non-conference portion of the slate for the Hurricanes, who open ACC play Saturday by hosting North Carolina State. Columbia, which was coming off an 18-day layoff, has three more non-conference games before opening its Ivy League schedule Jan. 14 at Cornell.
