Miami went on a 17-0 scoring run in the second half to build a 21-point lead, and hung on for a 73-61 victory over Rutgers in an ACC-Big Ten Challenge on Wednesday night in Coral Gables, Fla.

Miami senior guard Davon Reed led all scorers with 18 points as the Hurricanes (5-2) snapped their losing streak at two games and evened their all-time record in the Challenge at 5-5. Freshman forward Dewan Huell recorded 14 points and seven rebounds in his first collegiate start.

Junior guard Mike Williams led the Scarlet Knights (6-1) with 16 points. The Knights are 1-2 in the Challenge.

Miami was clinging to a 36-32 lead before going on its key run, running out to a 53-32 advantage with 11:27 left.

But some sloppy play over the final minutes helped the Knights crawl back in it. They were within 64-54 with less than two minutes to play before the Hurricanes regained control.

Miami easily outshot Rutgers 48.1 percent to 36.5 percent, but the Hurricanes committed 19 turnovers to 11 for the Knights, giving Rutgers a 21-12 advantage in points off turnovers.

Miami, which led by 15 points midway through the first half, was still up 27-14 at the 7:37 mark before going into a scoring slump that lasted nearly five minutes. The Knights crept to within four points at 27-23 before forward Kamari Murphy ended the drought with a pair of free throws with 2:45 left.

The Knights were within three points with 25 seconds left in the period, but guard Ja'Quan Newton was fouled while canning a jumper and converted the free throw to put the Hurricanes up 34-28 at the break.
