Where: Williams Arena, Minneapolis, Minnesota

A 22-3 run to start the second half helped Minnesota race past Texas-Arlington for an 84-67 victory on Monday on the Golden Gophers' home court.

The Golden Gophers (2-0) trailed 41-35 at the half, but were a different team after the break. Minnesota center Reggie Lynch opened the second-half scoring with a layup. After Arlington forward Faith Pope hit two free throws to push the lead back to six, Lynch made two more jumpers to get his team within a basket. Guard Amir Coffey then tied the game with a dunk.

After a timeout, Jorge Bilbao put the Mavericks (1-1) back up by one with a free throw, but the Golden Gophers went on a 16-0 run to go up 59-44 and cruised to victory from there.

Epitomizing the team's second-half woes, the Mavericks tried to call timeout down by 16 with 5:57 to play. But since UT-Arlington had already used all its timeouts, the result was a technical foul, and guard Nate Mason made the ensuing free throw.

Lynch had 14 points to lead six Minnesota players in double figures. Mason and guard Dupree McBrayer each added 13 points, with forward Eric Curry contributing 12 off the bench.

Guard Jalen Jones led the Mavericks with 17 points. Sun Belt preseason player of the year Kevin Hervey was held to eight points, with six of those coming at the free throw line.

UT-Arlington committed 30 fouls, with Minnesota making 30 of the resulting 40 free throw attempts. The Mavericks also turned the ball over 15 times and missed nine of their 22 free throws.

After going 10 for 25 from three-point range in the season opener, Minnesota struggled from long range against the Mavericks. The Golden Gophers made just 4 of their 23 attempts from beyond the arc.
