Dayton point guard Scoochie Smith made a left-handed layup high off the glass in traffic with 12 seconds left, propelling the Flyers to a 82-77 win over Iowa in a quarterfinal game of the Advocare Invitational on Thursday at HP Field House in Orlando, Fla.

Smith had 11 points, seven assists and five rebounds for Dayton (4-0). Guard Charles Cooke, who scored 22 points, put the game away with a pair of free throws. The Flyers play Monmouth, which beat Notre Dame 70-68, in the semifinals Friday.

Iowa had a chance to tie with a 3-point attempt with three seconds left, but the try failed to draw iron. Dayton led most of the game but needed a rally in the second half to survive a game that featured 14 lead changes.

Cooke made four of six from 3-point range.

Iowa forward Jarrod Uthoff had 18 points to lead the Hawkeyes. He hit four of seven from long distance.

Hawkeyes 7-foot center Adam Woodbury drained two free throws to put Iowa up 77-76. That came shortly after Smith kissed a one-handed runner off the glass to give Dayton a 76-75 lead with 1:24 remaining.

Iowa stormed back in the second half with a 13-0 run over more than four minutes and led 70-69 with 4:31 left.

Dayton lost patience in the half-court offense to let Iowa back in the game. The Flyers scored their first basket in more than five minutes to cut the lead to 72-71, only to lose track of Iowa point guard Mike Gesell for a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
