Arizona 68, Xavier 60: T.J. McConnell had 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists and the Wildcats finished the contest with a 19-7 run to get past the Musketeers in NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 play in Los Angeles.

Kaleb Tarczewski added 12 points and 12 rebounds for second-seeded Arizona (34-3), which has won 14 consecutive games and will face top-seeded Wisconsin in Saturday’s West Regional final. Stanley Johnson had 12 points and Gabe York scored nine points on three 3-pointers.

Matt Stainbrook contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds for sixth-seeded Xavier (23-14), which lost for the second time in seven games. Dee Davis and Jalen Reynolds scored 12 points apiece but 3-of-17 shooting from 3-point range hurt the Musketeers.

Xavier led 53-49 after two free throws by Reynolds with 7:25 to play before Arizona went on a 9-1 burst to take a four-point advantage on McConnell’s 3-pointer with 4:16 to go. Tarczewski hit two free throws to give the Wildcats a 64-57 lead with 1:58 remaining and Myles Davis hit a 3-pointer to bring the Musketeers within three before McConnell and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson each knocked down two free throws to make it an eight-point game and seal it.

Stainbrook had 10 points and seven rebounds in the first half, including a tying jumper with 1:51 left to forge a tie at 28 leading into the break. The Musketeers went up by three early in the second half when Remy Abell made the squad’s first 3-pointer of the contest and later led 42-38 after two free throws by Stainbrook before the Wildcats used a 9-4 run to take a one-point lead on McConnell’s jumper with 9:54 to play.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The double-double is Stainbrook’s fifth of the season. … Hollis-Jefferson sprained his left knee in the first half and later returned but scored only five points. … Reynolds played despite a Xavier student filing a complaint against him with the school’s police department earlier this week.
