Wichita State 81, Indiana 76: Fred VanVleet matched his career high of 27 points to lead the Shockers past the Hoosiers in NCAA Tournament round of 64 play in Omaha, Neb.

Ron Baker had 15 points, five rebounds and five steals for seventh-seeded Wichita State (29-4), which will face second-seeded Kansas in Sunday’s round of 32. Zach Brown contributed career highs of 11 points and eight rebounds and the Shockers were 29-of-34 from the free-throw line and committed just seven turnovers while forcing 13.

Yogi Ferrell scored 24 points and made four 3-pointers and James Blackmon Jr. added 14 points for 10th-seeded Indiana (20-14). Troy Williams had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Collin Hartman also scored 11 points for the Hoosiers, who were 11-of-22 from 3-point range.

The Shockers trailed by four with under 12 minutes to play before going on a 15-3 surge and taking a 65-57 lead on Brown’s putback with 7:52 remaining. The Hoosiers recovered to pull within 72-71 on Ferrell’s 3-pointer with 2:21 to play and later trailed by two before Baker made 3-of-4 free-throw attempts in the final 19 seconds.

Indiana led by as many as seven points in the first half and Ferrell scored 15 in the opening 20 minutes to help the Hoosiers hold a 39-36 lead at the break. Wichita State inched ahead early in the second half and later rolled off eight straight points to take a 50-47 lead on two free throws by Shaquille Morris with 14:08 left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Shockers were 2-of-13 from 3-point range with Baker missing all five attempts as part of a 3-of-13 shooting performance. … Williams was 2-of-10 from the field while producing his double-double. … Wichita State F Darius Carter left briefly in the second half after taking a hit from Hartman and had a tooth maneuvered back into place and underwent a concussion test before being cleared to return a few minutes later.
