No. 16 San Diego State 51, Bakersfield 27: Dwayne Polee scored 13 points and Kevin Zabo added seven as the Aztecs overcame a poor shooting game against the visiting Roadrunners to remain unbeaten.

Polee missed 11-of-14 shots and Winston Shepard was 2-of-8 for six points along with six rebounds as the Aztecs’ offensive woes continued. San Diego State (3-0) shot 24.6 percent and 3-of-24 from 3-point range after shooting 32.7 percent from the field in Tuesday’s 53-49 victory over Utah.

Brent Wrapp, Kevin Mays and Aly Ahmed scored six points apiece for Bakersfield (0-4), which was held to 21.4 percent shooting and missed 19-of-20 shots from beyond the arc. The Roadrunners fell behind 12-0 before scoring their first points on Wrapp’s layup with 7:44 left in the first half.

San Diego State won its 17th consecutive home game despite missing 19-of-24 shots in the first half. The Aztecs were 1-of-12 from beyond the arc and took a 22-12 lead into the break after holding Bakersfield to six field goals.

Jaylin Airington scored with just under 18 minutes left to cut the deficit to six before the Aztecs answered with a 15-4 run capped by Zabo’s 3-pointer. The Aztecs, who missed 9-of-29 foul shots, extended their lead to 27 on Shepard’s two free throws with 2:06 remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: San Diego State has won 43 straight games against California schools. … Agelo Chol had six points and five rebounds for the Aztecs, who have held their last 23 opponents at Viejas Arena to 70 points or fewer. … Mays grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for Bakersfield, which committed 23 turnovers.
