West Virginia trailed by 16 points at halftime and crept within 59-49 on Carter’s two free throws with 9:26 remaining. But the Bears pulled away again and Gathers’ layup made it 75-55 with 5:37 left as Baylor cruised to the finish.

The Bears jumped out to a quick 13-4 lead and later expanded it to 29-16 on Prince’s basket with 6:57 remaining in the first half. O’Neale’s 3-pointer pushed the margin to 19 late in the opening period as Baylor shot 65.4 percent before the break.

GAME NOTEBOOK: G Gary Browne started in place of Staten but departed less than three minutes into the contest with an ankle injury. … Baylor committed just eight turnovers and racked up 10 steals. … Carter’s output was his second-highest of the season behind the 28 he scored against VMI on Nov. 26.
