LSU 64, South Carolina 58: Jarell Martin collected 10 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks as the Tigers held off the visiting Gamecocks.

Tim Quarterman scored 16 points off the bench and Keith Hornsby added 15 as LSU (16-4, 5-2 SEC) won its third straight. Jordan Mickey scored 14 points and matched Martin with six blocks as the Tigers swatted away 13 shots.

Duane Notice scored 12 points and Sindarius Thornwell collected 11 points and nine rebounds as South Carolina (10-9, 1-6) dropped its fourth straight. Tyrone Johnson scored 10 points and Michael Carrera chipped in nine and 10 boards for the Gamecocks, who shot 34.4 percent from the field.

Carrera tipped in his own offensive rebound to give South Carolina a 53-52 lead and buried a 3-pointer on the next possession to make it a four-point gap with 4 1/2 minutes to play. Josh Gray responded with five straight points for LSU and Martin’s dunk with 1:11 left gave the Tigers the lead for good as the Gamecocks had three shots blocked and gave up an offensive rebound on Gray’s missed free throw with 22 seconds left before Mickey buried two at the line.

South Carolina shot 28.1 percent from the field in the first half but got a 3-pointer from Notice in the final minute to pull within 29-28 at the break. Notice connected again from beyond the arc to put the Gamecocks in front 40-34 with 15 minutes left but LSU responded with a 12-3 run to pull back in front midway through the second half.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Mickey’s six blocks pushed him one past Chris Johnson (176) for second place on the school’s all-time list (Shaquille O’Neal, 412). … Carrera has 28 rebounds in the last three games and South Carolina got the better of the glass 40-32. … Martin posted his second straight double-double and third in the last five games.
