No. 16 Iowa State 89, No. 20 Texas 84: Georges Niang scored 19 points and Bryce Dejean-Jones added 18 as the host Cyclones sailed past the Longhorns in Big 12 play.

Jameel McKay added 14 points and Monte Morris contributed 13 points and six assists as Iowa State (15-4, 5-2) shot 54.7 percent from the field. Dustin Hogue scored 11 points as the Cyclones sidestepped a furious comeback bid by Texas to win for the fifth time in seven games.

Javan Felix was 4-of-4 from 3-point range, scored a season-best 20 points and had eight assists for Texas (14-6, 3-4), which has lost four of its last six games. Jonathan Holmes had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Isaiah Taylor had 17 points and eight assists and Myles Turner added 16 points.

Iowa State had an 11-point halftime lead and scored 15 points over the first 4 1/2 minutes of the second half to open a 51-33 advantage. A fast-break basket by McKay made it 60-39 with more than 11 1/2 minutes remaining but Texas battled back and used a 10-2 surge to pull with 79-73 with 2:06 left and later moved within 87-84 on a 3-pointer by Holmes with 21.9 seconds to play before the Cyclones held on.

The contest was tied at eight minutes into the first half and Texas trailed 24-21 after Holmes’ three-point play with 5:34 left in the half. Long and Niang followed with consecutive 3-point baskets and the Cyclones eventually led by 13 after back-to-back dunks by McKay before settling for a 36-25 lead at the break.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Iowa State has won 18 consecutive home games and 42 of its last 44. … The Longhorns collected 17 offensive rebounds while holding a 39-29 edge on the boards. … The Cyclones recorded 20 assists while committing just six turnovers.
