No. 3 Virginia 62, No. 12 Notre Dame 56: Darion Atkins had 14 points and eight rebounds and Malcolm Brogdon added 13 points as the visiting Cavaliers remained unbeaten by downing the Fighting Irish in ACC play.

Justin Anderson tallied 11 points as Virginia (15-0, 3-0) used a late 9-0 run to record the victory. The start is the best in school history since the 1980-81 squad led by Ralph Sampson won its first 23 contests.

Pat Connaughton had 21 points and eight rebounds for Notre Dame (15-2, 3-1), which had an 11-game winning streak halted. Demetrius Jackson and V.J. Beachem added 12 points apiece.

A three-point play by Connaughton gave the Fighting Irish a 45-41 lead with 8:13 to go before the Cavaliers scored seven straight points and took the lead on Marial Shayok’s 3-pointer with 5:51 to play. The game was tied at 53 when Anderson drained a 3-pointer to put Virginia ahead with 3:48 remaining, Brogdon added a driving basket to make it 58-53 with 1:12 left, Anderson increased the margin to seven with two free throws with 21.5 seconds to go and Brogdon added two free throws with 8.8 seconds to play to make it a nine-point lead.

Virginia jumped out to a 16-6 lead before the Fighting Irish answered with 13 consecutive points. Virginia moved back ahead by a point before Beachem drained two 3-pointers to give Notre Dame a 27-24 halftime lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Connaughton made four 3-pointers as Notre Dame went 10-of-24 from behind the arc. … C Mike Tobey contributed eight points and seven rebounds off the bench for Virginia. … Fighting Irish PG Jerian Grant had six assists but scored just six points on 2-of-8 shooting.
