No. 15 West Virginia 78, TCU 67: Gary Browne scored nine of his season-high 16 points during a critical stretch in the second half as the visiting Mountaineers prevailed in their Big 12 opener without star Juwan Staten.

Devin Williams had 14 points and eight rebounds for West Virginia (13-1, 1-0 Big 12), which won its sixth straight despite playing without Staten, the preseason conference player of the year who was out because of flu-like symptoms. Jaysean Paige added 10 points and Brandon Watkins six along with eight boards as the Mountaineers outrebounded the Horned Frogs 43-33.

Kyan Anderson scored 19 points for TCU (13-1, 0-1), which dropped from the ranks of the unbeaten and lost a 20th consecutive conference contest. Trey Zeigler added 17 points and Brandon Parrish 11 as the Horned Frogs committed 18 turnovers.

After Parrish scored seven points in less than two minutes to pull TCU within two with eight minutes left, Browne and Williams combined for the next 14 Mountaineers points to push the bulge back to 70-61 with 3:21 left. Anderson did his best to keep the Horned Frogs alive, scoring 11 points in the final 5:42, but the Mountaineers had an answer each time to close out the win.

TCU jumped to a 7-0 lead after a 3-pointer by Anderson and led by as many as 10 before Paige and Jevon Carter scored five apiece as West Virginia closed out the first half on a 12-5 run to pull within 32-30. The Horned Frogs got a 3-pointer from Parrish and a jumper from Chris Washburn to open a seven-point edge, but the Mountaineers held the Horned Frogs without a field goal for 5 1/2 minutes and used a 13-4 run to take a 51-45 lead with 9:54 to play.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Staten, who averages 16.1 points and 4.2 assists, had played in 63 straight games. … West Virginia took its first lead 38-37 on a layup by Daxter Miles, Jr with 17:12 left in the game. ... Browne entered the game averaging five points on 35.8 percent shooting in 18.6 minutes per contest.
