California 81, No. 19 Washington 75: Jordan Mathews scored a season-high 31 points with the help of 5-for-8 shooting from 3-point range as the Golden Bears knocked off the visiting Huskies in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.

David Kravish added a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds for California (11-3), which committed just four turnovers compared to 13 for Washington. Tyrone Wallace shot 4-for-20 from the floor but contributed 19 points with the help of 11-for-12 from the free-throw line.

Nigel Williams-Goss had 19 points, nine assists and eight rebounds to lead Washington (11-2), which has lost two straight following its 11-0 start. Robert Upshaw contributed 16 points, eight rebounds and five blocks off the bench, and Jernard Jarreau matched his season high with 12 points for the Huskies.

A three-point play by Jarreau and a dunk by Williams-Goss cut a seven-point deficit to two with 4:40 left, but Mathews buried a 3-pointer and Wallace made two free throws to push the lead back to seven. Wallace then made six free throws in less than a minute to extend the lead back into double figures with 1:20 on the clock, and that was enough to hold off the Huskies.

Washington used an 8-0 run to take an 18-15 lead and the Huskies stayed ahead until they went a 5 1/2-minute stretch without a field goal early in the second half, opening the door for California to slip ahead. The Golden Bears continued to added to their lead, building a 47-39 advantage with 12:13 to play.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Kravish’s previous career high was 19 points, achieved three times. … Upshaw needs seven blocks to break Washington’s single-season record of 67. … Washington F Shawn Kemp Jr. scored four points while playing in his 100th career game for the Huskies.
