P.J. Horgan scored a team-high 19 points for The Citadel (4-7), which dropped its third in a row. Ashton Moore added 15 points for the Bulldogs, who were held without a field goal for more than 14 minutes during the decisive blitz.

Michigan State trailed by a point late in the first half before scoring 26 unanswered points for a 51-26 lead with 13:30 to play. The Spartans hit nine of their first 10 shots after intermission and held The Citadel to three free throws before Horgan connected on its first field goal of the second half with 8:48 to play to make it 61-30.

Moore knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and Quinton Marshall made a pair of buckets as The Citadel battled back from an early seven-point deficit to take a one-point lead with three minutes left in the opening half. Michigan State went ahead to stay with a 7-0 spurt and took a 32-26 lead into the locker room on Valentine's 3-pointer.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Valentine, who wore goggles to protect a scratched cornea sustained in Saturday's loss, also had six assists and six rebounds as Michigan State controlled the glass 34-19. ... Moore was 4-of-8 from 3-point range as the Bulldogs connected on 8-of-21 from behind the arc. ... Spartans F Branden Dawson missed his second straight game with a fractured wrist and will be re-evaluated over the holiday break with the hope he can return for the start of Big Ten play Dec. 30.
