Zak Irvin scored 18 points and Spike Albrecht hit the tiebreaking 3-point basket as the host Wolverines edged the Orange in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Albrecht had 11 points and a career-best nine assists and nailed his big shot with 30.6 seconds left to give Michigan a 66-63 lead. Ricky Doyle and Caris LeVert each added 12 points for the Wolverines (6-1).

Trevor Cooney scored 16 points, Rakeem Christmas added 15 and Chris McCullough had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Syracuse (5-2). The Orange twice had opportunities to take the lead in the final 17 seconds but turned the ball over on both occasions and Kaleb Joseph air-balled a tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

It was a three-point margin just prior to the midway point of the second half before Albrecht and Irvin each hit a 3-pointer during a 10-3 run that gave Michigan a 58-48 edge with 7:12 to play. Syracuse recovered with a 15-5 burst to tie the score at 63 on Christmas’ dunk with 59.4 seconds left before Albrecht’s 3-pointer put the Wolverines ahead to stay.

Christmas scored 12 first-half points, including a three-point play in the final minute to give the Orange a 31-29 lead. Michigan used an 8-0 burst in the second half – including 3-pointers by Albrecht and Irvin – to possess a 45-39 advantage with 14:39 remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cooney made four 3-pointers for Syracuse and Irvin knocked down four for the Wolverines. … The Orange committed 19 turnovers, including six by Christmas and costly final-minute miscues by McCullough and Joseph. … Michigan PG Derrick Walton Jr. (toe) was back from a one-game absence and had three points on 1-of-7 shooting.
