Maryland 61, Monmouth 56: Freshman Melo Trimble had 24 points as the host Terrapins held off the Mountain Hawks.

Trimble hit 3-of-5 3-pointers and made 13-of-14 free throws to lead Maryland (6-0). Jake Layman added 14 points and Jon Graham had four while the other two Terrapin starters failed to score.

Deon Jones and Max DiLeo each had 11 points for Monmouth (2-3). Brice Kofane added six points, five rebounds and four blocks while Justin Robinson chipped in nine points, five rebounds and four assists.

Timble and Jared Nickens hit back-to-back 3s to cap a 14-3 run for a double-digit Maryland lead, and an 11-2 run - highlighted by another Trimble 3-pointer - gave the Terrapins a 30-14 lead with about two minutes left in the first half. The Hawks finished the half on an 8-2 run, getting 3-pointers from Andrew Nicholas and DiLeo in the final minute to cut the lead to 32-22.

The Terrapins had one field goal during a 10-minute span of the second half but were only outscored 10-9 and still held a 47-40 lead before Nickens hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with just under five minutes remaining. Monmouth answered with an 14-5 run, capped by 3-pointers from Nicholas and DiLeo in the final minute, to get within 55-54 before Trimble sealed the win at the free-throw line.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Maryland announced senior G Dez Wells had surgery on a broken bone in his right wrist Friday and will miss at least four weeks. ... Terrapins senior F Evan Smotrycz (foot) saw his first action of the year, recording four points, a team-high six rebounds and a block off the bench. ... The Terrapins are off to their best start since the 2006-07 season (8-0).
