Nebraska 80, Omaha 67: Shavon Shields scored a career-high 35 points and collected eight rebounds as the Cornhuskers downed the Mavericks in the second Division I matchup between the two in-state schools.

Shields went 12-of-16 from the field and connected on each of his four 3-point attempts while Terran Petteway contributed 20 points and 12 boards for Nebraska (3-1), which rebounded from its four-point overtime loss at Rhode Island over the weekend by holding Omaha 23 points below its season average. The Cornhuskers overcame a season-high 20 turnovers with their biggest rebounding margin of the season (41-28).

Devin Patterson paced the Mavericks (2-2) with 20 points while CJ Carter added 13 as Omaha was unable to register its second straight upset after stunning Marquette on the road Saturday. Marcus Tyus rounded out the Mavericks in double figures with 12 points.

Omaha connected on its first three shots and knocked down four 3-pointers to race out to a 23-7 lead less than five minutes into the contest. The Mavericks connected on eight of their first 10 shots, but missed 10 of their next 11 and Nebraska rallied behind Shields and Petteway, who combined for all but three of the points during the Cornhuskers’ 23-2 run as Nebraska powered its way to a 42-34 advantage at the break.

Nebraska did not allow its eight-point halftime edge to drop below four despite going the first seven minutes of the second half without a field goal – a stretch that ended with a jumper and 3-pointer from Shields on consecutive possessions. Shields drilled another triple with nine minutes left to stretch the margin to 61-50 and the Cornhuskers held their double-digit edge the rest of the way.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Shields, who scored 25 points against Rhode Island, surpassed his previous career high of 33 against Illinois on Feb. 12. … Omaha matched its season high of 19 turnovers. … The Cornhuskers have won 11 straight home non-conference games and are 17-2 in such contests under third-year coach Tim Miles.
