Georgetown 78, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 62: Joshua Smith posted his first double-double in nearly three years with 20 points and 12 rebounds as the host Hoyas used a strong second half to down the Islanders.

Aaron Bowen tallied 11 of his 13 points after intermission and added five steals for Georgetown (2-0), which shot 55.2 percent in the final 20 minutes to break open a tie game at the break. Mikael Hopkins contributed 12 points and seven boards while freshman center L.J. Peak rounded out the Hoyas’ double-digit scorers with 10.

Bryce Douvier paced Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-1) with 16 points while John Jordan had 14 points, five assists and two steals. Rashawn Thomas finished with 12 points before fouling out late for the Islanders, who remained winless in four tries against the Big East.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi led for the majority of the first half, only to watch Georgetown cut into a pair of six-point edges and forge a 34-34 tie at the break on two late free throws from D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera. The Hoyas came out strong after intermission, connecting on four of their first five shots – including back-to-back baskets by Jabril Trawick – to build a six-point cushion heading into the first media timeout.

Jordan sank two free throws to get the Islanders back within five less than two minutes later before Smith’s three-point play sparked a 12-2 surge that left the Hoyas with a 60-45 lead midway through the half. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi twice closed within 10, but Bowen’s dunk with just over four minutes left doubled Georgetown’s margin.
