Georgia Tech 66, Alabama A&M 46: Charles Mitchell scored 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the host Yellow Jackets pulled away midway through the first half.

Demarco Cox, who like Mitchell played in his second game with Georgia Tech (2-0), added 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting as the Yellow Jackets rallied from an early 6-2 deficit to lead comfortably most of the night. Marcus Georges-Hunt and Tadric Jackson scored eight points each as seven Yellow Jackets scored seven or more points.

Nicholas West scored 11 points to lead the Bulldogs (0-2), who hit three of their first four shots from the field before missing 13 of their next 17 attempts. Alabama A&M shot 36.2 percent from the field and committed 20 turnovers.

Josh Heath ignited the early Yellow Jackets’ surge with five consecutive points to put Georgia Tech ahead 7-6 and Quinton Stephens’ tip-in with 6:29 remaining in the half capped the 20-5 surge as the Yellow Jackets built a 22-11 advantage. Cox scored two baskets in the final three-plus minutes and Abdoulaye Gueye’s tip-in at the buzzer made it 34-20 at halftime.

West’s layup with 12:03 to go pulled Alabama A&M within 45-32, but the Yellow Jackets answered with 11 straight points to push their cushion to 56-32 on Mitchell’s free throw with 7:37 remaining. Georgia Tech shot just 3-for-16 from 3-point range, but dominated the backboards 45-26 and recorded 20 offensive rebounds.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Georgia Tech G Travis Jorgenson did not play due to soreness in his right knee; Heath started and finished with seven points and seven assists. … Mitchell recorded his sixth career double-double, the first five coming for Maryland. … The Yellow Jackets improved to 15-1 all-time against Southwestern Athletic Conference schools and has won all five meetings with Alabama A&M.
