Zak Irvin added 21 points for Michigan (1-0), which raised its 14th Big Ten championship banner prior to the game. Caris LeVert pitched in 20 points and dished out a career-high nine assists to go with a team-high eight rebounds for the Wolverines, who drained 11-of-19 from 3-point range.

Kyle Cooper poured in a game-high 28 points and 10 rebounds for Division II Hillsdale, which was picked to finish fourth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's North Division this season. Stedman Lowry added 15 points for the Chargers, who stayed competitive early and converted 10-of-23 from 3-point range.

The Chargers pulled to within 72-60 on a layup from Lowry with just over eight minutes remaining before Michigan thwarted that budding threat with 10 straight points to take control. Hillsdale posed no further challenge down the stretch, missing 11 consecutive attempts from the field.

Hillsdale gave Michigan all it could handle in the early going, tying the game at 21 on a jumper from Nick Archer just past the midway point of the first half. The Wolverines answered with a 29-9 run to establish a 20-point lead before Jason Pretzer's 3-pointer stopped the surge and the teams hit the locker rooms with Michigan up 50-33 at the break.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Michigan, which shot 47.7 percent from the field last season to lead the Big Ten, connected at a 51.7 percent clip against Hillsdale. ... Chargers PG Zach Miller contributed a team-high seven assists but managed just three points in his first career start. ... Irvin, who ranked fifth in the conference last year by shooting 42.5 percent from 3-point range, knocked down 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.
