No. 8 Virginia 79, James Madison 51: Justin Anderson was the ACC Sixth Man of the Year last season, but the guard showed he will be just fine as a starter, scoring a game-high 18 points and adding six rebounds to lead the visiting Cavaliers to an easy win in the season opener for both teams.

Anthony Gill tallied 15 points and Malcolm Brogdon added 14 for Virginia (1-0). Darion Atkins, the only senior in the game, led both teams with 10 rebounds as Virginia had a 38-27 advantage on the boards.

Freshman Hari Hall had 15 points, including four 3-pointers, off the bench and Jackson Kent added 14 points for James Madison of the Colonial Athletic Association, which shot 28.3 percent from the field. Starting guards Ron Curry and Winston Grays were a combined 1-of-13 from the field, including 0-for-6 beyond the arc.

The Cavaliers broke the game open early in the second half when they went on a 12-0 run to lead 70-41 with 9:23 remaining as five different players scored during the five-plus minute stretch. The Dukes (0-1) went nearly 10 minutes without making a field goal, ending the drought on a 3-pointer from freshman Joey McLean to trail 73-51 with 4:57 to go.

Virginia led 51-33 at halftime on the strength of 69.2 percent shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, and 12-of-14 from the foul line. The Cavaliers also had five blocks and James Madison made 7-of-16 3-pointer attempts in the opening 20 minutes.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cavaliers scored on its first shot when F Anthony Gill hit a jumper at 19:44. … Virginia is 10-0 against in-state rival James Madison, which is about an hour’s drive from Charlottesville. … Both teams are young – Virginia has one senior on the roster and James Madison has none -- with the Dukes starting three sophomores and the Cavaliers opening with four juniors and redshirt freshman guard Devon Hall in the starting lineup.
