North Carolina State 74, Xavier 59: T.J. Warren overcame early foul trouble and scored 16 of his 25 points after the break while becoming the school's all-time single-season scoring leader as the Wolfpack downed the Musketeers in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Dayton, Ohio.

Ralston Turner added 17 points for North Carolina State (22-13), which has won five of six and will head to Orlando, Fla., on Thursday to face fifth-seeded Saint Louis. Tyler Lewis handed out seven assists as North Carolina State never trailed in a battle of No. 12 seeds and held Xavier to 2-of-14 shooting from beyond the arc.

Matt Stainbrook tallied 19 points and nine rebounds for Xavier (21-13), which closed its season with four losses in its final five contests. Semaj Christon had 14 points but finished with seven turnovers while Isaiah Philmore chipped in with 11 points for the Musketeers.

Although Xavier shot 52 percent from the field and Warren was limited after drawing two fouls less than five minutes into the game, North Carolina State forced eight first-half turnovers and led by as many as 10 in the first half. The Musketeers rallied within two early in the second half before Warren scored 12 of the Wolfpack’s next 18 points as North Carolina State built a 57-47 lead with 8:10 remaining.

Philmore hit one of his two free throws and Stainbrook added a dunk following an offensive rebound to bring Xavier within seven, but Turner answered with a jumper while back-to-back baskets by Jordan Vandenberg stretched the margin to 12 with just over four minutes left. Warren concluded his dominant second half with a dunk after a Xavier timeout to give the Wolfpack a 69-52 advantage with 2:41 to go.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Warren, the ACC Player of the Year, has 843 points this season. surpassing David Thompson’s previous record of 838.. … Xavier freshman G Myles Davis went 0-of-3 from beyond the arc and finished the season missing 21 of his last 22 3-point attempts. … The Wolfpack blocked nine shots while the Musketeers had none.
