Jackson Shelstad swished a long 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds left in overtime Saturday and Oregon held off Michigan 86-83 in a nonconference thriller in Eugene, Ore.
Shelstad was wide-open from about 30 feet out on the right wing when he took Jermaine Couisnard's pass and hit nothing but net. The Wolverines' Dug McDaniel nearly forced a second overtime but barely missed a halfcourt heave as time expired.
Brennan Rigsby scored 19 points for the Ducks (5-2), leading four players in double figures. Shelstad finished with 14, while reserve Kalio Oquendo and Couisnard each added 13 points. Couisnard also dished out six assists.
McDaniel was outstanding in defeat for Michigan (4-4), pumping in a game-high 33 points on 12-of-21 shooting. He canned 7 of 12 3-pointers as the Wolverines made 13 of 31. Nimari Burnett scored 13 and Olivier Nkamhoua added 12.
Neither team owned more than a six-point lead at any time in a well-played game that included 10 lead changes and nine ties. Oregon sank 50.7 percent of its field goal attempts, including 10 of 16 from the 3-point line.
Oregon forced overtime when Oquendo sank two foul shots with 15.1 seconds left in regulation. The Ducks could have won the game in regulation but Shelstad and Rigsby missed good looks in the final five seconds after a Michigan turnover.
The game's tone was set in a back-and-forth first half. Neither team led by more than three points until Oquendo converted a layup at the 6:31 mark to give Oregon a 26-21 lead. But Michigan was able to answer back.
When Burnett drained a long 3-pointer with 2:08 left, the Wolverines crawled within 34-33. However, Oquendo came up with a pair of layups, the final one a second before the halftime buzzer, to give the Ducks a 38-35 edge at the break.
Both teams shot close to 50 percent from the field but the difference was that Oregon made 4 of 5 3-pointers while Michigan was just 4 of 14.
