Kaiden Rice made a Georgetown record 10 3-pointers on his way to scoring a career-high 34 points to propel the Hoyas past UMBC 100-71 on Wednesday night in Washington.

Rice, a grad transfer from The Citadel, made 10 of 12 shots from beyond the arc as Georgetown (4-4) shot 50 percent from the floor and 56.5 percent from beyond the arc in beating the Retrievers for the third straight year.

In the absence of 7-footer Timothy Ighoefe (broken hand), Georgetown also got a breakout performance from 7-2 Ryan Mutombo (15 points, 11 rebounds), the son of former Hoyas and NBA star Dikembe Mutombo. Malcolm Wilson (four points, four blocks) also provided a lift inside.

Aminu Mohammed contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds for Georgetown, while Dante Harris added 13 points, six rebounds and seven assists. The Hoyas had a whopping 61-30 edge on the boards.

UMBC (5-4) got hot shooting from L.J. Owens, who made 5 of 8 from the arc in scoring 17 points. Darnell Rogers added 11 points and five assists.

Early in the game, Georgetown hit 10 straight shots from the floor, including a trio of 3-pointers by Rice and three buckets in the paint from Mutombo.

The shooting streak put the Hoyas up 28-15. But the Retrievers retaliated immediately as Owens made three straight shots from beyond the arc. Another 3-pointer by Owens later in the half put UMBC up 33-31.

Rice hit a pair of jumpers sandwiched around a layup by Mutombo, part of an 8-0 run which gave the Hoyas the lead for good. Harris and Mohammed made 3-pointers to give Georgetown a 48-40 edge at the break.

Rice hit two more 3-pointers early in the second half as the Hoyas pushed their lead into double digits and then used their superior depth to run away.
