Jaden Ivey scored a game-high 19 points and Trevion Williams recorded 13 points and 18 rebounds as No. 2 Purdue topped Iowa 77-70 on Friday night in West Lafayette, Ind., in the Big Ten opener for both schools.

Purdue (8-0, 1-0 Big Ten) remained unbeaten while sending Iowa (7-1, 0-1) to its first loss of the season. Patrick McCaffery paced the Hawkeyes with 15 points, while Tony Perkins (14) and Kris Murray (12) followed in double figures.

Ivey starred throughout, shooting 7-for-13 and providing a handful of booming dunks that sent the home crowd into a frenzy. He contributed eight points, three rebounds and a steal to a tide-turning, 13-3 run in the second half that helped the Boilermakers climb ahead by as many as 19.

They needed the cushion, as Iowa used a 13-2 run to get within 72-70 with 2:32 to go.

The Hawkeyes started 6-for-8 from the floor in the second half, but the Boilermakers consistently found answers behind timely shooting.

Successive treys from Eric Hunter Jr. and Williams in a 23-second span quickly expanded an eight-point cushion to 14 with 15:38 remaining. The Hawkeyes again clawed within single digits less than four minutes later, but Purdue had a long-range answer again, this time from Mason Gillis.

Gillis scored 12 points for Purdue, which overcame 17 turnovers while shooting 42 percent -- the first time it has fallen below 50 percent this season.

Iowa was without leading scorer Keegan Murray, who was hobbled by a right ankle injury late in the Hawkeyes' road win at Virginia on Monday but returned to the game. To be sure, the Hawkeyes missed Murray's presence on both ends of the floor: He is averaging 24.6 points and 8.9 rebounds over the first month of the season.

McCaffery and Josh Ogundele both grabbed five rebounds for Iowa.

With top-ranked Duke losing earlier this week, Purdue is projected to ascend to the first No. 1 ranking in school history on Monday.

The Boilermakers have won five of their last six against Iowa. The teams will meet again on Jan. 27 in Iowa City.
