David Duke scored a game-high 31 points on 10-for-22 shooting, and Providence held on for a 72-63 overtime win over visiting Marquette in a Big East Conference showdown Wednesday night.
A.J. Reeves added 13 points for Providence (9-7, 5-5 Big East), which avenged a loss to Marquette earlier this month. Nate Watson had nine points and seven rebounds.
Koby McEwen scored 13 points to lead Marquette (8-8, 4-6). D.J. Carton and Justin Lewis finished with 12 points apiece.
Providence scored the first five points in the overtime session, all thanks to Duke. He made a free throw with 3:44 to go and followed with a 3-pointer with 3:07 remaining. Another free throw made it 64-59 with 2:22 remaining.
Marquette pulled within 65-63 on a dunk by Carton with 1:02 to go, but Alyn Breed hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to increase Providence's lead to 68-63 with 35 seconds left.
Providence closed out overtime with four free throws to finish the scoring.
Late in regulation, the Friars led by four before Marquette rallied to pull even at 59 with 50 seconds left. A slam dunk by Theo John, assisted by Carton, prompted a timeout by Providence.
Neither team could convert on its next possession. Marquette called timeout with 0.8 seconds left to try to set up a buzzer-beater, but Greg Elliott missed a fadeaway 3-point attempt as time expired.
Marquette trailed 49-43 with 7:54 left when it went on an 11-2 run to seize the lead. A 3-pointer by Elliott punctuated the run, which put the Golden Eagles on top 54-51 with 4:57 remaining.
Reeves then made a 3-pointer for Providence to even the score at 54 with 3:41 to go.
Providence led 25-18 at the half. Duke led all first-half scorers with 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting.
Both teams struggled to find baskets before the break. The Friars shot 27.3 percent (9 of 33) during the first half, while Marquette shot 34.8 percent (8 of 23) but missed all seven of its 3-point attempts.
Neither team scored a point for the first 3:32 of the game. Breed finally broke the scoreless tie when he made a jump shot for Providence.
McEwen answered 33 seconds later with a layup to give Marquette its first points.
