Jalen Coleman-Lands had 17 points and Rasir Bolton added 16 with seven rebounds and seven assists, as Iowa State overcame a rough first half to post an 80-63 season-opening victory over visiting Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday in Ames, Iowa.
Tyler Harris scored 14 for the Cyclones, who have seven new faces this season (including transfers Coleman-Lands from DePaul and Harris via Memphis) and showed some early rust.
Iowa State was down 10-0 and trailed by as many as 12 to UAPB (0-3) during a first half in which the hosts shot 38.2 percent from the field and 4-of-18 from 3-point range to chase a 37-34 deficit at the break.
Thanks to Harris, Coleman-Lands, and Bolton the Cyclones made their first five field goals and shot 59.4 percent in the second half.
A pair of 3s from Harris, who went 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, highlighted the Cyclones' spurt of scoring 12 of the first 15 points of the half. Iowa State used a 12-0 run later in the second half to go up 60-45 and take control of the contest.
Iowa State, which hit 12 3s for the game, didn't score its first points of the contest until Solomon Young's layup with just over 16 minutes to play in the first half.
UAPB made its first seven shots of the contest and led 14-2, but went more than 8 minutes without a field goal.
The Cyclones used a 9-0 run to get back in the game and got within a point on multiple occasions in the first 20 minutes. However, they were never able to pull even with the Golden Lions, who shot 51.9 percent in the first half after making 30.3-percent of their shots in the first two games versus Marquette and Wisconsin.
Markedric Bell had 15 points with 10 rebounds and Shaun Doss also scored 15 for UAPB, which dropped to 0-5 all-time versus Iowa State.
The Cyclones announced before the game that sophomore guard Tre Jackson will miss time due to a knee issue. Jackson started 12 games as a freshman in 2019-20.
