Collin Gillespie finished with 22 points and made 6 of 11 3-point attempts to lead No. 5 Villanova to a 85-68 victory over Marquette on Wednesday night in Milwaukee.

The Wildcats (8-1, 3-0 Big East) lead the conference after winning their sixth consecutive game overall. The Golden Eagles (5-5, 1-3) took their third loss in a row and their fourth setback in the past five games.

Gillespie scored 14 of his points in the first half and made four of his first seven 3-point attempts. Villanova took the lead for good on a Caleb Daniels layup with 9:34 left before halftime.

Villanova's Justin Moore contributed 14 points, four rebounds and three assists. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl had 13 points.

Marquette fell short in its bid to score its third victory this season over a top-10 team despite shooting well throughout the game. The Golden Eagles hit half of their 3-point tries (9 of 18) and 51 percent from the floor overall (26 of 51). However, they committed 17 turnovers that led to 18 points for the Wildcats.

Jamal Cain led the Golden Eagles with 15 points and seven rebounds. D.J. Carton and Theo John each finished with 10 points, and Carton added five assists. Koby McEwen was held to five points on 2-of-10 shooting.

Dawson Garcia finished with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds for Marquette, which outrebounded Villanova 34-27.

The Wildcats entered the game averaging the fewest turnovers in the nation (8.3 per game). They committed only four giveaways in the game, two in the each half.

Villanova finished with 17 assists, led by Daniels, who had five assists to go along with his 10 points.

Villanova will continue Big East play on Jan. 2 when it travels to play Xavier. Marquette will also play on the road next on Jan. 2 when it takes on Georgetown.
