Iowa State broke open a close game with an 13-0 run in the second half to cruise to a 70-52 win over Northern Illinois on Tuesday in Ames, Iowa.

Rasir Bolton paced the Cyclones (2-1) with 17 points, and forward Solomon Young added 15 points, seven boards and three blocked shots. The Cyclones shot 12 percent (3-for-25) on 3-point attempts but limited the Huskies to 18 second-half points. Northern Illinois shot an icy 30 percent (18-for-60) from the field.

Northern Illinois senior guard Eugene German led all scorers with 24 points on 8-for-27 shooting to go with six rebounds.

The Cyclones survived a first-half scare and a bad shooting night from 3-point territory to pad their series advantage against the Huskies to 6-2. Iowa State made just one of its first 19 3-point tries but shot a sizzling 22 of 33 from inside the arc in taking a 64-43 lead with 5:48 to go.

After trailing the entire first half, the Cyclones took their first lead of the game at 38-36 following a three-point play by Bolton with 17:50 remaining. Michael Jacobson followed with a layup to cap a 7-0 run and extend the lead to 40-36.

The Cyclones outscored the Huskies 24-6 in the first 10 minutes of the second half to seize a 55-40 lead following a jumper by Young.

The Huskies (0-2) wasted little time finding their shooting touch at the start before cooling off in the second half.

Meanwhile, the Cyclones opened the nonconference game misfiring on four of their first 18 shots, including a 1-for-11 showing from beyond the arc to fall into an 23-15 hole at the 7:52 mark. German sparked the fast start by hitting a pair of 3-pointers and putting up 12 quick points.

Northern Illinois' Rod Henry-Hayes drilled a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 26-15 before the Cyclones answered with a 16-8 run to close the gap to 34-31 at halftime. German was 6-for-15 from the field for 17 points and five rebounds while the Cyclones shot 8.3 percent (1-for-12) on 3-point attempts in the first half.
