No. 25 Colorado blew open a close game Saturday night with an 18-0 run midway through the second half, enabling it to subdue San Diego 71-53 in Boulder, Colo.
D'Shawn Schwartz led the balanced Buffaloes (2-0) with 15 points on just six field-goal attempts, while Tyler Bey tallied 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his 21st career double-double. Lucas Siewert came off the bench to score 11 points, and McKinley Wright stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, six boards and five assists.
Joey Calcaterra and reserve Noel Coleman each scored 10 points for the Toreros (2-3), but they couldn't generate enough offense during their third game in five days. San Diego hit just 34.5 percent of its field-goal attempts and committed 19 turnovers, leading to 22 points.
Leading 46-42 despite a 3-pointer by Calcaterra with 10:57 left in the game, Colorado ran off and hid. Siewert started the spurt with a 3-ball, followed by a Bey layup and another 3-pointer from Siewert that made it 54-42 with 9:19 remaining. Two foul shots by Shane Gatling with 5:24 left capped the run and upped the lead to 64-42.
The Buffs canned 11 of 24 3-pointers for the night and won the rebounding battle 40-33, adding 25 points off their bench.
The teams swapped the lead for most of a tightly played first half. Neither team led by more than four points in an opening 20 minutes controlled primarily by the defenses.
A 9-3 burst gave San Diego a 9-7 edge at the 15:03 mark as Calcaterra converted a transition jumper. Colorado rattled off the next six points for a 13-9 advantage on Gatling's 3-pointer after a turnover with 12:44 left in the half.
The teams went back-and-forth for the half's remainder, the Buffs landing the final punch when Maddox Daniels drained a 3-ball with 40 seconds remaining to take a 30-27 lead to the locker room. Neither team made more than 39 percent from the field and they combined for 16 turnovers, 10 by the Toreros.
