Joe Wieskamp set the tone by scoring 11 early points to finish with 23 points, while Luka Garza tallied 21 points and 10 rebounds to spark Iowa to a 72-52 romp over Minnesota in Big Ten Conference action on Monday night in Iowa City.

Wieskamp made a season-high five 3s in seven attempts to end 8-for-15 from the floor and added six rebounds and two blocks for Iowa (7-3, 1-1). The 6-foot-11 Garza, who was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 33.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in road games against Syracuse and No. 4 Michigan last week, shot 8-for-17.

Minnesota never got on track shooting from long distance, finishing 6-for-25 on 3s and tallying 15 turnovers to spoil a nine-block effort. Daniel Oturu led the Golden Gophers (4-5, 0-1) an efficient 10-for-12 display to finish with 22 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Alihan Demir tallied 13 points and five boards.

The Hawkeyes scored the first five points of the second half and eventually built a 51-34 lead following a 3-pointer by CJ Fredrick and baskets by Wieskamp and Garza.

Weiskamp came out on fire by hitting his first three 3-pointers for 11 points to give the Hawkeyes a 13-6 lead. He scored on a layup to push the lead to 17-10. Minnesota came right back to avoid the early deficit from getting out of hand when Demir hit two 3s to give the Golden Gophers a 20-19 advantage.

The Hawkeyes regained the lead with a 9-0 run that ended with a Garza layup for a 28-20 edge. Iowa closed the game with another surge to take a 37-29 lead at halftime. The Hawkeyes shot 6-for-12 on 3-pointers and limited the Golden Gophers to 4-for-15 shooting from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.
