Malik Massey made the game-tying 3-pointer with 6:25 remaining, Isaiah Miller hit the tiebreaking dunk 21 seconds later and visiting UNC Greensboro clamped down defensively down the stretch and knocked off Georgetown 65-61 Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
The Hoyas held a 54-51 lead on a jumper by Myron Gardner with 6:34 remaining but he missed the foul shot and James Dickey grabbed the rebound. Massey then hit a 3-pointer from the left side for a 54-54 tie and that started the Spartans' game-ending 14-7 stretch.
UNC-Greensboro (6-2) took the lead for good when Keyshaun Langley stripped the ball from James Akinjo with 6:08 remaining. Four seconds later Miller finished the fast break with a dunk for a 56-54 advantage.
The Spartans struggled to get separation and held a 60-56 lead on a dunk by Dickey with 2:44 remaining. That was Greensboro's last basket but they compensated with defense, notably when they forced Georgetown's Omar Yurtseven into missing a potential go-ahead dunk with 54 seconds left.
The Spartans held a four-point lead on two free throws by Langley with 16 seconds but Mac McClung's layup brought the Hoyas within 63-61 with two seconds left. After using a timeout, the Spartans iced the game when Langley hit two free throws with one second to go.
Langley scored 11 points to lead the Spartans, who compensated for shooting 38.1 percent by coming up with 14 steals and forcing 19 turnovers. Miller and Dickey added 10 points apiece for UNCG.
Akinjo led the Hoyas (4-3) with 12 points but shot 4 of 15 as the Hoyas shot 36.8 percent and missed eight of their final 11 shots. Yurtseven added 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Hoyas struggled to get going in the first half but settled for a 32-29 halftime. The Spartans surged to a 42-35 lead on a layup by Miller with about 15 minutes left, but the Hoyas countered with a 16-7 spurt to take a 51-49 lead before struggling down the stretch against Greensboro's relentless trapping defense.
