Roosevelt Jones scored 16 points and the visiting Bulldogs knocked off the Friars to lock up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Big East tournament.

Kellen Dunham had 15 points while Kelan Martin contributed 14 and five rebounds off the bench for Butler (22-9, 12-6), which will play sixth-seeded Xavier in Thursday's quarterfinal round at Madison Square Garden. Kameron Woods chipped in with 12 rebounds and three steals while Andrew Chrabascz added nine points for the Bulldogs, who made all 20 of their free throws.

Kris Dunn scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half while adding in six assists and four steals for Providence (21-10, 11-7), which received eight points on 2-of-10 shooting from Big East leading scorer LaDontae Henton. Tyler Harris scored 17 points in a reserve role for the Friars, who earned the No. 4 seed for the conference tournament and will face fifth-seeded St. John’s in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Dunham's 3-pointer with just over five minutes to go gave Butler a 58-49 lead, but Dunn made two free throws and a floater in traffic to get Providence back within five before a pair at the line by Jones. Dunn's three-point play with 51 seconds left made it 62-59 and his 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining pulled his team within 68-64, but time ran out on the Friars' comeback bid.

Chrabascz had seven straight points to give Butler an early 9-3 lead and Martin scored five points in an 11-0 run later in the first half as the Bulldogs went into the locker room up 33-22. Alex Barlow buried a 3-pointer to open the second half and hit another with 13 minutes left to push Butler's lead to 46-30, but the Friars answered with a 10-0 burst that included a 3-pointer and a dunk by Dunn.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Butler won for the first time in four all-time meetings with Providence. ... Chrabascz chipped in five rebounds, four assists and three blocks in his second game back from a broken hand. ... Henton grabbed a team-high seven rebounds but the Friars were beaten on the boards by a 39-27 margin.
