No. 3 Virginia 51, Florida State 41: Anthony Gill had 13 points and nine rebounds as the host Cavaliers held off the upset-minded Seminoles in ACC play.

Darion Atkins contributed 11 points and four steals as Virginia (25-1, 13-1) matched the best 26-game start in school history by the 1981-82 squad. Malcolm Brogdon scored 10 points and briefly left the game after a collision with teammate London Perrantes.

Xavier Rathan-Mayes scored 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting for Florida State (15-13, 7-8). The Seminoles shot 32.6 percent from the field and didn’t make a field goal over the final 10 1/2 minutes.

Brogdon drove for a hoop with 3:04 left to give the Cavaliers a six-point lead and Florida State’s Montay Brandon made two free throws with 2:34 left to push the Seminoles within 45-41. But Gill hit two free throws and Marial Shayok scored on a fast-break dunk with 1:17 left to all but seal it.

Virginia built a 12-4 lead over the opening eight minutes before Florida State recovered to take a 15-13 lead on a basket by Rathan-Mayes with 4:40 left in the first half. The Cavaliers led 22-21 at the break and stretched the lead to six early in the second half before Jarquez Smith drained a jumper to give the Seminoles a 37-36 lead with 10:33 left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Brogdon and Perrantes had a head-to-head collision while playing defense with 14:39 to play and both left for treatment, with Brogdon suffering a cut over his right eye and returning to action with 12:59 remaining while Perrantes, who didn’t play again, had a big gash on his nose when he returned to the bench with 6:47 left. … The Seminoles were 4-of-19 from 3-point range and 7-of-12 from the free-throw line. … The Cavaliers were 1-of-11 from 3-point range.
