Georgetown 79, St. John’s 57: Freshman Isaac Copeland notched 12 points and nine rebounds as the balanced Hoyas rolled over the visiting Red Storm in a Big East contest.

D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera contributed 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Georgetown (17-8, 9-5 Big East), which made 7-of-10 from 3-point range in the second half after going 0-of-9 in the first. Mikael Hopkins had 12 points and eight boards while Joshua Smith and L.J. Peak each scored a dozen and Jabril Trawick had 11 for the Hoyas.

Phil Greene IV scored 18 while Sr’Dominic Pointer chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds for St. John’s (17-9, 6-7), which saw its three-game win streak come to an end. Red Storm leading scorer D’Angelo Harrison, bothered by a calf injury, was limited to five points and 0-of-9 shooting from the field,

Georgetown trailed by four with a little under nine minutes left in the first half before running off 18 of the final 22 – six by Hopkins – to build a 33-23 advantage at intermission. St. John’s did not make a field goal during the Hoyas’ surge and shot 29.6 percent in the opening 20 minutes while turning the ball over 10 times.

Trawick converted a pair of 3-pointers while Copeland added a dunk and drained another from behind the arc as Georgetown stretched its lead to 49-30 with 15 ½ minutes to go. Greene’s 3-pointer pulled the Red Storm within 63-50, but Peak drained a 3-pointer and Hopkins had a tip-in to push the lead back to 18.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Copeland has scored in double figures six out of the last nine games after accomplishing the feat twice in his first 16 contests. … Georgetown finished with a 43-33 edge on the boards. … St. John’s, which still leads the all-time series 54-48, will host the Hoyas on Feb. 28.
