No. 3 Virginia 52, No. 8 Louisville 47: Malcolm Brogdon scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half as the host Cavaliers upended the Cardinals in the first meeting between the new ACC rivals since 1990.

Anthony Gill added 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench for Virginia (21-1, 9-1 ACC), which committed only two turnovers. Darion Atkins recorded nine points, seven boards, three steals and two blocks as the Cavaliers survived 33.3 percent shooting – including 2-of-14 beyond the arc.

Terry Rozier led the way with 16 points for Louisville (19-4, 7-3), which only saw four players score for the second consecutive game. Montrezl Harrell chipped in 12 points, Chris Jones had 11 while Wayne Blackshear contributed eight points and seven rebounds for the Cardinals.

Harrell’s dunk with 10 ½ minutes left in the first half knotted the game at 13-13, but Louisville missed its final 11 shots before the break. Atkins scored five of Virginia’s 11 points over that stretch and held the Cardinals scoreless for over 12 minutes until Jones sank a jumper with 18 ½ minutes left in the contest.

Louisville battled back from a 13-point deficit to close within 47-43 with 1:23 remaining when Harrell blocked a jumper from Gill and finished on the other end with a thunderous two-handed dunk in transition on an alley-oop pass from Rozier. Following a jumper from Harrell and a free throw by Brogdon, Jones had a chance to close the gap to two on a potential three-point play, but missed the free throw and Brogdon closed it out on a pair of foul shots with 10 seconds left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: G Justin Anderson – Virginia’s leading scorer and the ACC’s top 3-point shooter – did not play in the second half and was spotted with an ice bag on his left hand. He finished with two points on 1-of-9 from the field and 0-of-3 beyond the arc. … Louisville’s 13-point first half was its worst scoring output in either half in 14 seasons under coach Rick Pitino. … The Cavaliers, who entered Saturday with the nation’s top-scoring defense, held their ninth opponent to 47 points or fewer.
