No. 11 Maryland 70, Minnesota 58: Freshman point guard Melo Trimble led the way with 20 points as the Terrapins defeated the visiting Golden Gophers for their seventh straight victory.

Dez Wells contributed 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals for Maryland (14-1, 2-0 Big Ten), which is off to its best start since 1996-97 when it had the same record. Jake Layman chipped in with 12 points while Damonte Dodd registered nine points to go along with a career-high 12 rebounds for the Terrapins.

Maurice Walker recorded 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead Minnesota (11-4, 0-2), which shot a season-low 33.8 percent from the field and was outrebounded 44-35. Carlos Morris added 18 points and six rebounds for the Golden Gophers, who came in shooting 42.4 percent from 3-point range before making 3-of-22 behind the arc Saturday.

Dodd scored six as Maryland put together a 17-2 burst to take a 15-point lead, but Minnesota answered with 16 of the final 20 in the first half – six by Walker – to pull within 36-33 at intermission. Trimble had six points as the Terrapins started the second half with an 11-2 run to push their lead to a dozen.

Morris recorded a basket and two free throws during a 9-4 spurt that pulled the Golden Gophers within seven with 8:41 left before Wells’ putback and two free throws made it 57-46. Minnesota cut its deficit back to eight, but Layman had a driving layup and a 3-pointer to increase the lead to 66-54 and Maryland cruised from there.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Six different players made a 3-pointer for Maryland in the first 11 minutes of the contest and the Terrapins made 8-of-26 overall from beyond the arc. … Minnesota G Andre Hollins, the team’s leading scorer coming into the game at 13.2 points, was held to two points on 1-of-9 shooting -- his fourth consecutive single-digit output. … The Terrapins lead the series 5-0, including a 68-58 victory at Minnesota in their previous meeting during the 2008 NIT.
