Maryland 78, Arizona State 73: Melo Trimble scored 31 points - two shy of the school record for a freshman - and the Terrapins scored the final seven to advance in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City, Mo.

Dez Wells scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half - including the go-ahead basket with 40.1 seconds left - while contributing eight rebounds, four steals and four assists for Maryland (4-0), which will meet the Alabama-Iowa State winner in Tuesday's championship game. Jake Layman scored 12 points and Damonte Dodd contributed four blocks and five rebounds for the Terrapins, who won the battle of the boards 34-24 while making 16-of-18 at the free-throw line.

Jonathan Gilling scored 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting from 3-point range for the Sun Devils (3-1), who were 14-of-27 from behind the arc. Bo Barnes added 17 points and was 5-of-7 from long range, Eric Jacobsen recorded 14 points and seven rebounds and Gerry Blakes scored all 14 of his points in the first half.

Maryland uncorked a 10-3 run - capped by Wells' jumper in the lane - to take a 63-61 lead with 8:12 remaining before Gilling and Barnes drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Sun Devils back on top 68-66 with 4:02 left. After Trimble and Barnes traded 3-pointers, Wells followed up his own miss to make it 71-71, and Jacobsen's bucket was answered by a pair of free throws by Trimble, who was 13-of-14 from the line, with 1:22 to play.

Wells spun into the lane and his one-handed shot gave Maryland a 75-73 lead and, after Kodi Justice missed a jumper with 20 seconds remaining, Trimble made a pair of free throws to seal it. Trimble (18 points) and Blakes combined to shoot 9-of-12 from the floor - 4-of-6 from 3-point range - and convert all 10 of their free throws as Arizona State took a 39-37 lead at the half on Tra Holder's tough runner in the lane with five seconds left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Trimble, who is on the watch list of candidates for the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award, scored 31 points in his first three games. ...
