California 60, No. 1 Arizona 58: Justin Cobbs sank a jumper with nine-tenths of a second left and the Golden Bears stunned the visiting Wildcats, ending their program-record 21-game winning streak to start the season.

Cobbs scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half while also contributing seven assists for California (15-7, 6-3 Pac-12). David Kravish added 14 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots, Richard Solomon had 12 points and seven rebounds and Tyrone Wallace scored 11 for the Golden Bears.

Kaleb Tarczewski scored a career-high 18 points and went 12-for-12 from the free-throw line, but it wasn’t enough for Arizona (8-1 Pac-12), which lost starting forward Brandon Ashley to a foot injury early in the contest. T.J. McConnell contributed 13 points but the team’s assist leader went without an assist and freshman Rondae Hollis-Jefferson scored 10 points off the bench in place of Ashley.

California took its biggest lead of the second half at 50-42 with 11 minutes left but Arizona began chipping away and took its first lead at 56-54 on a jumper by Tarczewski with 4:18 to play. Cobbs ended a five-minute scoreless spell with a jumper and tied the score one more time with two free throws before sinking the winner.

Ashley, who came in tied with Aaron Gordon as the team’s second-leading scorer, headed to the locker room with just under 18 minutes left in the first half and it was quickly announced he would not return due to a right foot injury. California did not trail in the first half, leading by as many as nine with just over five minutes left before taking a 30-29 lead into the break after the Wildcats closed on a 6-0 run.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Gordon finished with eight points, matched his season high with 13 rebounds and contributed six assists. … Arizona leading scorer Nick Johnson (16.7) finished with a season-low four points on 1-for-14 shooting and five turnovers. … Arizona trailed at the half for the seventh time this season.
