Roy Devyn Marble scored 21 points for Iowa (16-5, 5-3), which lost for the second time in three games. The Hawkeyes went 14-plus minutes with a field goal over the second half and nearly the entire overtime, and missed a chance to force a second extra session when Mike Gesell’s driving layup at the buzzer was off the mark.

Costello snapped a tie with a free throw with 1:47 remaining in overtime and his putback hoop and a 3-pointer by Russell Byrd gave the Spartans a 70-64 lead with 34 seconds left. The Hawkeyes got within two on Marble’s 3-point play with six seconds on the clock and Appling missed two free throws with 4.7 seconds left for Michigan State before Gesell came up empty.

Iowa attempted 16 free throws before Michigan State attempted its first and used its 12 first-half makes to take a 30-26 lead into the break. The Hawkeyes didn’t make a field goal over the final 9:56 of the second half and Gesell hit one of two free throws with 47.7 seconds left to force the overtime.
